2021 Mendham Baseball Coaching Staff
Brian Weingart is entering his 5th year as the head coach of the Minutemen. In 2019, the minutemen saw their record improve to 13-7 and a number 4 seed in the very competitive North II Group 3 section. The 13 wins was 5 wins more than the previous two season, while the number 4 seed was the highest for the Mendham team since 2016. In addition to the on field success, the facilities at Mendham High School have undergone a complete overhaul under Coach Weingart’s watch. Improved practice facilities and a brand new infield playing surface headline the improvements.
Coach Weingart attended Cranford High School where he was second team all-state, first team all group, all county player. Coach Weingart was the catcher for the 1997 Group III State Champion Cougars, their first state championship in over 25 years.
Coach Weingart attended the University of Delaware and William Patterson University becoming an All-Conference player for the Pioneers in 2001. During his college playing career, Coach Weingart attended IMG academy in Bradenton, FL where he was an All-star. After college Coach Weingart played for the Broxton Rox of the Can–Am Independent Baseball League.
Coach Weingart returned to Cranford High School as an assistant varsity baseball coach from 2012 – 2016. During Coach Weingart’s stay at his alma mater the varsity baseball team won 2 group III state championship, including a #1 finish in 2013. In addition, the team won 4 sectional championship and 2 Union County championships during that time.
Coach Weingart is currently a middle school Health and Physical Education Teacher with a master's degree in education.
VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
Ricky Gathen attended Hopatcong High School graduating in 2008. He was named 2nd Team All Sussex County in 2007 and in 2008. In 2007 he led the conference with 10 Home Runs. He currently sits 2nd All Time in Career Home Runs at Hopatcong High School with 21.
Ricky is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University where he was a catcher for the Devils from 2009-2013. He was named Captain his Senior Year. Ricky is a school and conference record holder for Hit By Pitches in a season. Ricky was awarded as the MAC Freedom Conference Player of the Week twice. In 2013, Ricky led the Freedom Conference in runners caught stealing and was named Team MVP.
He has been an Assistant Varsity Coach at Mendham High School since 2017.
Ricky is currently a 4th Grade Teacher in the Hanover Township School District since 2016.

VARSITY PITCHING COACH
Coach Thurnes graduated Roxbury High School in 2011 where he was named 1st Team All Morris County and 1st Team All Conference. Ryan attended Fairleigh Dickinson University where he pitched from 2012-2014. He is third in FDU's history books for appearances in a single season.
In 2016 Coach Thurnes started coaching as an Assistant Varsity Coach at Mendham High School.
VARSITY ASSISTANT COACH
Coach Cilenti attended Mt. Olive High School where he was a three year Varsity starter in Baseball & Soccer. Nick spent most of his High School career playing 3rd Base. He was a Two-Time Conference Player of the Week in the Iron-Hills Conference. He finished with a career .367 batting average.
Coach Cilenti attended East Stroudsburg University where he received a Bachelors Degree in Rehabilitative and Human Services in 2014. He continued his education at Marywood University where he received a Masters Degree in Social Work in 2017.
Coach Cilenti has been the Varsity Assistant Baseball Coach at Mendham High School since 2019. He is also an Assistant Soccer Coach at Mt. Olive where he has been since 2017.
Currently Coach Cilenti works as a School Social Worker at an Alternative School called Celebrate the Children.
Freshman Head Coach
Coach Miller has been the freshman coach for the Minutemen since 2017. Prior to coaching at Mendham, Coach Miller was a varsity assistant coach for Mount Olive High School. During his time there, Mount Olive won a sectional and North championship, finishing in the top 20 at the conclusion of the 2014 season. Coach Miller also had a successful run as the junior varsity coach at Morris Catholic High School.
Coach Miller is currently a Health and Physical Education teacher in the Roxbury school district and holds a master's degree in Educational Administration.
JV Head Coach
Coach Matyas was a former pitcher and outfielder for the Cranford Cougars. After playing at Cranford under Coach McCaffery, Coach Matyas went on to receive his Associate’s degree in Education from Union County College. Upon transferring to Montclair State University, Coach Matyas was a relief pitcher and received a Bachelor’s degree in History and his Master’s in Secondary and Special Education. Before coming to the Minutemen, Coach Matyas was the Varsity pitching coach at Randolph High School. Coach Matyas currently plays baseball in the Amateur Baseball Association for the Jersey Dodgers where he is a pitcher and second baseman.
